They say to write what you know. In this case, I started capturing living histories with my mom, Joan. These conversations have been a gift to both of us. And I think they would be different—maybe a little more open—with someone who didn't know a lot of the background or whose feelings she might not be trying to honor. I am so grateful to have them for our extended—and growing—family.
